From February 4-April 30, 2010, the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History will feature the work of Wendy Phillips, an Atlanta-based photographer, and painter Lucia Mendez from the Dominican Republic, in a show entitled La Sombra y el Espíritu: Womens' Healing Rituals in the Diaspora - The Work of Lucia Mendez and Wendy Phillips. 

La Sombra y El Espíritu brings together two innovative artists whose meditations on rites, rituals and women's roles as healers, provide us with a new window on spirituality in the diaspora.  Mendez Poster_Final.pdf (418 kB)

Wendy Phillips has been working with communities in Mexico and other areas in South and Central America for the past 15 years. She is particularly known for her iconic photography from Afro-Mexican communities in La Costa Chica, Oaxaca, and Guerrero. 

Lucia Mendez' work reflects her interest in both our material investment in ritual and worship, as well as the subtlety implicit in our performance of those rituals.  She examines this interplay by exploring the relationships between gesture, the attitude of the body, and women's practices of spiritual conversation. 

This exhibition supports Carolina Performing Arts and its Creative Campus Initiative's yearlong programmatic focus on Diasporas. This project also marks the first collaboration between the Stone Center and Radames Rivera of Galeria Exodo in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  

An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on February 4 at 7 pm at the Stone Center. Both artists will attend to speak about their work. You can see examples of their work at:

Share the meaning of the Holidays with others in need and help us to raise money.  In partnership with Wake County Human Services, we will use the proceeds from this event to share presents with children in need while we do "Trullas Navideñas (Christmas Carols)" at Wake County Human Services site in January 9, 2010.

About Los Pleneros de la 21

Los Pleneros de la 21 (LP21) are considered New York’s preeminent Afro-Puerto Rican bomba and plena musicians. Bomba and plena are traditional Afro-Puerto Rican musical genres respectively dating back to the early 17^th and 20^th centuries. The group consists of an intergenerational mix of Puerto Rican folk masters, professional musicians and young practitioners from both the island and New York, all united to preserve and honor their heritage. Since 1983, LP21 have performed for audiences all over the world and released several recordings. The group’s performances often combine bomba and plena with jazz, salsa, rock and rap to create excitement and energy throughout the audience. LP21’s album, “Para Todos Ustedes,” was nominated for a 48^th Annual Grammy Award (2006) for Best Traditional World Music Album.
